Maths at Old Sodbury

Our philosophy in mathematics at Old Sodbury we focus on teaching for mastery. We understand that mastery is about acquiring a deep, secure long term understanding of the subject. Mastery is about acquiring a solid enough understanding of maths in order to be able to move on.  At Old Sodbury our teaching has the key features of mastery

  • An expectation that all pupils can achieve
  • Differentiation is through deep knowledge, individual support and appropriate intervention
  • Practice and fluency consolidation with reasoning is at the heart of our teaching 
  • Precise questioning in lessons allow regular assessment opportunities 
  • Reasoning is embedded in all parts of our lessons
  • Use of manipulatives for all


The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practise with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
  • Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions


Aims of mathematics teaching

  • to develop a positive attitude towards mathematics 
  • to develop strong understanding of number sense, place value and calculation methods 
  • to give pupils rich mathematical experience where they can apply their skills 
  • to develop reasoning, logical reasoning and problem solving skills 
  • to give all pupils the opportunities to develop their skills 
  • to give pupils opportunities to appreciate the world of mathematics both inside and outside the classroom


Organisation of the curriculum

  • The national curriculum forms the basis for our long term planning. For each year group their is a set of age related expectations. Medium term planning is mapped term by term, this is turned into individual unit planning. As we have mixed aged classes, all planning caters for this. At the start of the academic year the Autumn term focuses on place value and addition and subtraction at Key Stage 1, in addition, multiplication and division is also covered in Key Stage 2.  Our planning ensures that objectives are closely matched and embedded through other aspects of the curriculum. 



Lessons have an agreed progression, every lesson starts with a teacher input for those pupils who need the input, alongside this we have three levels of challenge. We call these Try it, Use it, Prove it. Within each challenge there is a level of reasoning and pupils use manipulatives to support understanding.

Try it: Skill based tasks, focuses on developing the fundamental skills needed for each topic, also using empty box problems to deepen the understanding.

Use it: The application of the skill, with a particular focus on real life situations such as multi-step word problems.


Single step example: 

Mary sneezes 11 times a day! How many times does she sneeze in a week?


Multi-step example:

A teacher has 4 packs of 48 colouring pens, the teacher shares the pens into 9 pots, which each have 15. How many pens will there be left?
